news

This is Joey. This is Jet. They got good news.

It has been a while since I have thought about the Joey and Jet series since the last book was published in 2006. Recently I heard good news from Simon and Schuster about both books. “Joey and Jet” , which had been out of print, is being reissued in paperback while Joey and Jet in Space is now going into a second printing. Richard Jackson was the editor for both books and Polly Kanevesky was art director.

I have been meaning to create another book but frankly, work had turned my attention away for the last few years. This might be the push I need to get started.

You may find both books on Amazon.

Here there everywhere

One nice thing about the future is taking work with you has never been easier. With more powerful laptops, higher res screens, cheap storage, smartphones and Skype, there is no excuse to not change the view from the studio now and then.  I’m taking advantage of this by working out of Hong Kong for December.

It’s good to be an illustrator.

Interview with James Yang

This video is a casual interview about my life as an illustrator. Seeing yourself as others see you can be very disturbing. Did not know that I express thoughts like a teen aged Valley Girl.  Sami Chan, Director and Editor. This was done for NYU sight and sound documentary.

Puzzlehead goes to Korea

This weekend I got a pleasant surprise from my publisher, Simon and Schuster. A Korean version of Puzzlehead is now available in Korea.  My parents would have been proud. As any Korean can tell you, impressing the parents is a very big deal.

100 Heads for Haiti Poster

100 Heads for Haiti Poster

While my work is digital these days, I was more than happy to break out the brushes for Spur Design and a good cause.

(via Spur Design Blog)

Joyce Hesselberth

In previous years, we used the large lobby space of our studio as a gallery to showcase some great illustrators and designers: Hatch Show Print,  Charles BurnsLuba Lukova,  Paul Sahre and Dan Gregory Dan Yaccarino, and  Steve Brodner to name a few. The gallery shows came to an abrupt halt after the birth of our 2nd and 3rd children. Twins. Dave handled the final gallery opening (Steve Brodner) less than 24 hours after the twins were born (a bit ahead of schedule). We had our hands full, and the gallery shows stopped.

At a recent production meeting Dave brought up an idea he had been kicking around to re-launch the gallery: invite 100 illustrators to donate work, a simple drawing of a head, to help with the recent Haiti disaster. Each head will be sold for $100. Our goal for the event: $10,000 for Doctors Without Borders. A limited edition poster showcasing the entire collection of heads will be available as well.

100 Heads for HaitiSo for the last few weeks drawings, collages, and paintings have been pouring in. The illustration community’s response has been overwhelming and we are thrilled to be hosting this event. Mark your calendars for the opening April 10th, 2010 from 6-8:30pm. For complete details visit the  100 Heads for Haiti page and see the list of participating artists.  Hope to see you there! Oh, the twins are now 5. And we still have our hands very full.
